It must be something to do with the Garden of England's fertile soil and temperate climate, because there are no less than three wine producers within easy reach of Bedgebury Camping. For wine enthusiasts or those who want a day out with a difference, visiting one of these establishments should definitely be on your list of things to do.
The Chapel Down Winery at Tenterden Vineyard, is around a half hour leisurely drive from Bedgebury Camping. It is the largest producer of English wines and is the first ever English producer to win gold for a sparkling wine at the renowned International Wine Challenge. A visit to this Winery is sure to impress.
Three guided tours of the Winery are arranged per day, each one lasting 1¼ hours. Expert will show and explain the processes involved in making the Winery's still and sparkling wines. Visitors will also learn about the history of English wine production and some detail about the grapes used at Chapel Down. Tours finish with a tasting from a selection of award winning wines. Visitors who wish to wander around the vineyards unaccompanied by a guide are free to do so, but access to the Winery is restricted to guided groups.
There is a Wine and Food store selling its own range of wines as well as a Bistro serving Chapel Down wines with or without food! Telephone enquiries regarding guided tours are strongly recommended prior to arriving.
The historic village of Biddenden is about a 20 minute drive away from Bedgebury Camping. The vineyards, spanning 22 acres, grow 10 varieties of grape and produce white, red, rosé and sparkling wines. The Biddenden Vineyard also produces its own traditional cider.
Two routes are marked around the vineyards for visitors to follow. Free guided tours by an expert are available, although pre-booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.
The wine presses and bottling line are on view in the Winery and visitors can sample from some of the wines, ciders and apple juices. The Biddenden Vineyard shop sells not only its own famous alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a delightful range of locally produced foods including chutneys and honey.
Lamberhurst Vineyard is no more than a 10 minute drive from Bedgebury Camping and is one of the oldest vineyards in the county. It grows Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Regent, Ortego and Rondo grape varieties.
Visitors can experience a stroll around the vineyard, enjoy a guided tour with wine tasting or have a bite to eat in the Bistro. The Bistro provides Full English Breakfast, light lunches, more substantial meals as well as teas, including cream teas, and coffees.
